Tips and Tricks

Add your own icons to the Control Panel

Not only can you customize the available tools from the list of commonly used features, but you can also add your own buttons directly to the “Home” and “Desktop” pages as well as the left side navigation bar. Simply click on “Custom Buttons” at the top of the “Home” screen in your Control Panel, then click Create. You will be prompted for a name which will appear under the button that you add, as well as where to display the icons. If you have your own icon file on your computer that you would like to display, you can specify it. Be sure to specify the destination URL that the button should link to. For example, you can add a custom button that links to the Digital Space Customer Support site, http://support.digitalspace.net/ by specifying the URL and using the button name “DigitalSpace Customer Support”. If you’re an advanced user and you create a link to an application or tool that you have programmed yourself, you can even use the available check-boxes to automatically log you in to the application upon clicking the icon.

Add a scheduled task

DigitalSpace now allows you to manage scheduled tasks, or “cron jobs”, which run automatically on your web server. Many applications now require the creation of a cron job to perform periodic maintenance tasks such as deleting old files or updating a database. You can add a cron job by clicking the Scheduled Tasks button in the “Home” section of the control panel. Just click on the Create button, specify the frequency that you would like the scheduled task to execute, and provide the command to run. If you have any questions about adding scheduled tasks, feel free to submit a support ticket via your customer manager at https://my.digitalspace.net/

Prevent lost emails

Each DigitalSpace email account is allotted up to 300 megabytes of space (up to the total included with your plan). Be sure that you keep your mailbox under 300 megabytes; with larger mailboxes, most email clients will have trouble downloading messages and may time out when connecting. If you are currently storing all mail on the server, be sure to periodically clear off any old messages (including sent mail) to prevent your mailbox from coming too large. You can use IMAP service with your favorite email client to see a live view of all mail stored on the server; just drag the messages from the folders on the server to the folders on your local computer to download a copy and free up space in your mailbox on the server.

Get quick access to your most-used functions in the Control Panel

The new DigitalSpace Control Panel, powered by Plesk, gives you more control than ever over your account. The control panel is broken down into two separate parts; the “Desktop” screen, which gives a quick overview of your account’s resource usage as well as quick access to your most-used features, and the “Home” screen that lists every available management area. You can customize the “Desktop” screen to remove items that you infrequently use, or to add shortcuts to commonly used features of the control panel. Just log in to your control panel, then click Customize Desktop in the top left. You will see a list of actively displayed tool icons on the right, and available tool icons on the left. Use the “Add” and “Remove” buttons to update the list of displayed icons to fit your needs. For example, you can add the “Open WebAdmin for a Database” tool if you frequently need to log in to phpMyAdmin, or remove “Create an Autoresponder” if you rarely use email autoresponders.
